Carpet history began during the dawn of humankind, when a surplus of animal skins was used to insulate caves against the howling winds and freezing temperatures that reigned outside. Not used for clothing or night coverings, these early kinds of carpets were used to add warmth and comfort to a living area, while at the same time enabling the inhabitants to quickly pick up all the skins and move on should changing food conditions demand that a move was in order.
A history of carpets picks up once more right around 2,000 BC, when efforts became known in and around Central Asia to knot together thin strips of fabrics and create coverlets for beds, walls, and also floors. Marco Polo commented on this practice in 1,000 AD, and an important date was added to carpet history. Fast forwarding this foray into the history of carpet making and the semi-occupation of Spain by the Moors in the 10th century may be credited with the introduction of carpets that were used on floors, walls, atop horses, and even as table coverings. Furthermore, a history of carpet colors reveals that it is in this time frame that the most amazing color combinations and textures may be found.
A name that will forever be connected with carpet history is Pierre DuPont who started his own niche in the history of carpets when he opened his carpet weaving shop in Paris, France. This is also the beginning of carpet installation history since many liked the fabrics and the warmth they provided but were not entirely certain how to keep these intricately woven pieces of fabric from moving. The Industrial Revolution in the early to mid 1800s saw its own separate textile manufacture revolution, and with it began professional carpet cleaner history, carpet padding history and of course the history of the traveling carpet sweeper. Officially, carpet sweepers history is said to have begun in 1883.
In 1947 nylon enters into the mix, and suddenly the door is thrown open not only for more durable carpets, but also for the beginning of Bissell carpet sweeper history, the history of carpet cleaner services that would go from door to door, the business carpet cleaning history that would have some cleaner specialize in businesses only while the history of carpet cleaners indicates that others will eventually only specialize in residential services. Other highlights of carpet history not mentioned here are the history of Persian carpets as well as the overall history of Islamic prayer carpets.
